About Crash Data Group
Crash Data Group, Inc (CDG) is a North American Event Data Recorder (EDR) Tool distributor. We sell EDR tools that consist of hardware and software that allows the user to image/download the crash data stored in passenger vehicles, SUV’s, and light trucks after a crash. The EDR data has been widely used for over 20 years to gain unbiased evidence regarding specific data parameters leading up to a crash.
There are three companies authorized to use the OEM proprietary data translations in their hardware and software applications to accurately retrieve and translate EDR crash data.
-
Bosch Automotive Service Solutions: The first EDR retrieval tool was built in the year 2000 by Bosch and General Motors. Since then, the Bosch CDR Retrieval Tool supports over 20 automotive vehicle manufacturers. Bosch CDR Tool
-
GIT America: GIT began EDR coverage in 2013 and works with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to provide the hardware and software to successfully download the EDR data in these vehicles. GIT EDR Tool
- Tesla Motors: The Tesla EDR hardware kit was introduced in 2018 and currently supports Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and the Cyber Truck. Tesla EDR Tool.
Crash Data Group is the sole source distributor for all three companies in North America. We stock all items in-house and sell directly to the end user via our online storefront or by government purchase order.
What is EDR?
An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is a device or function installed in a motor vehicle and its purpose is to record technical vehicle and occupant information for a brief period of time before, during and after a crash. The EDR function is typically located inside a vehicle's airbag control module (ACM) and is capable of recording information (data elements) such as the vehicle's indicated speed, brake pedal use, accelerator pedal input, steering wheel input, seatbelt status, airbag deployment performance information, crash severity and many more driver inputs and vehicle system status information.
EDR retrieval tools are a reliable, versatile, and increasingly powerful industry standard platform that retrieves EDR crash data from the vast majority of modern vehicles. For more information click here.
Who uses EDR Tools?
Experts throughout the world use EDR readout tools for the retrieval of data from EDRs to assist with investigations of motor vehicle accidents. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), EDR technology "...can make a major impact on highway safety, assisting in real-world data collection to better define the auto safety problem, aiding in law enforcement, and understanding the specific aspects of a crash."
The Code of Federal Regulations Part 563 states that if an automobile has an EDR, then there must be a commercially available tool to retrieve the EDR data. Although EDR Tools can be purchased by anyone, the most common industries that incorporate the EDR tool in their investigations and analysis include:
- Accident Investigators
- Insurance Special Investigation Units (SIU) and Claims Adjusters
- Law Enforcement
- Automobile Manufacturers
- Personal Injury Law Firms
- Government Agencies
