EDR Tool Manufacturers

There are three companies that build specialty tools to retrieve EDR data from crashed vehicles and are authorized to use the OEM proprietary data translations in their software applications to accurately retrieve and translate EDR crash data.

Specialty tools like the Bosch CDR Tool, GIT EDR Tool, and the Tesla EDR Hardware are required to retrieve EDR data from crashed vehicles. Data can be retrieved through the vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) connector but for severe crashes, where access to the OBD connector is not possible due to a damaged electrical system, the EDR tool can connect directly to the airbag control module (ACM) or electronic control unit (ECU) using one of many direct-to-module cables. The Bosch CDR product line alone offers over 100 unique CDR cables, fitting more than 50 brands for connecting directly to a supported vehicle’s ACM or ECU.

  • BOSCH

Robert Bosch GmbH is a German multinational engineering and technology company founded in 1886.  They have divisions for automotive components, industrial tech, consumer goods, and energy solutions. The Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) System is part of their Automotive Service Solutions branch, headquartered in Michigan.

Developed by Bosch Automotive Service Solutions, Crash Data Retrieval is a system that has become the industry-standard tool for imaging/downloading and interpreting crash data from vehicles’ Event Data Recorders (EDRs). Bosch works directly with the various Automotive OEMs to obtain proprietary data translations used the Bosch CDR software.

The first CDR retrieval tool was developed in the year 2000 by Vetronix/Bosch and General Motors. Since then, Bosch Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) products have grown to support over 23 automotive manufacturers and have been trusted internationally by law enforcement, insurance companies, crash researchers, law firms, auto manufacturers and government agencies to access EDR information on a wide range of passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs. • GIT AMERICA:
GIT began EDR coverage in 2013 to support Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles. GIT works directly with Hyundai and Kia to provide the EDR hardware and software to successfully download the EDR crash data in these vehicles. GIT EDR Tool

  • TESLA MOTORS:
The Tesla EDR hardware kit was introduced in 2018. The Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck are equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The EDR records data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems when the system senses a crash or a crash-like situation, such as hitting a road obstacle. This data is stored in the vehicle's Restraints Control Module (RCM).

The recorded data may help Tesla and other interested parties better understand the circumstances which lead to crashes and the potential for injury. Event data is recorded by your vehicle only when it senses a non-trivial physical occurrence; data is not recorded by the EDR under normal driving conditions.

Tesla provides free, publicly available software which may be used to access and retrieve EDR data and provides a free online service that generates a report in PDF format from the retrieved data.  Tesla EDR Tool.

It is important to note there are other companies that build the various modules (ACM, PCM, ASCM, ROS, RCM, etc.) that may store EDR data installed in various vehicles. That doesn't mean those companies also make a tool to read the EDR data from those modules. In addition, Bosch builds modules for many automobile manufacturers that may not be supported by the Bosch CDR Tool. You should always check the vehicle coverage list for each tool to view which vehicles are supported.

Crash Data Group is the exclusive distributor for all three companies in North America. We maintain stock on-site and serve end users through our online store or government contracts.

EDR retrieval tools are a reliable, versatile, and increasingly powerful industry standard platform that retrieves EDR crash data from the vast majority of modern vehicles.
